Travel tech startups, from Barcelona and around the globe, are taking off at an incredible rate and changing not just the way we book our trips or pick out destinations, but our entire concept of travelling. Prominent trends in the travel tech industry typically rely on using artificial intelligence, machine learning, chatbots and cloud computing to make the travel experience as easy, seamless and personalized as possible. The most innovative travel tech companies that recognize the potential of these technologies are quickly becoming gamechangers of the industry. Here are six Barcelona travel startups that are at the forefront of the transformation that’ll have us talking to non-human travel agents, booking flights with a simple text message, and embarking on day trips to the edge of space.
Personalization is the ultimate keyword for the immediate future of travel. Travisy uses AI to help you plan trips that are tailored to your needs and your needs only. After answering a few simple questions to map your interests, budget and other factors, you just select the dates for your trip and the powerful algorithm will plan the entire thing for you. You get a full travel itinerary with suggestions on where to stay, what to see, what to do, where to eat and how to spend your evenings, as well as all flights, routes, maps and guided tours. So basically exactly what you want, served to you on a silver platter – before you even know that you want it.
Have you ever found yourself wishing you could get away for a few days, but couldn’t decide where to? What if you didn’t have to know? Waynabox lets you book a trip to a surprise destination: you’ll only find out where you’re going two days before you leave. All you have to do is choose the airport that you’ll be flying from, select the number of nights you want to spend at your destination, and eliminate any city that you don’t want to visit. They’ll take care of flights and accommodation for you, starting from as low as 150 euros per person. Travelling to a foreign place and stepping out of your comfort zone can be fun and therapeutic at the same time – try it!
If you’re planning a different type of trip, one that’s not just a spontaneous weekend getaway but a (possibly) once-in-lifetime adventure, Exoticca is the startup for you. They’ve put together exclusive travel packages to exotic destinations, and there’s a good chance that you’ll get a better deal than if you tried to organize a trip of the same caliber on your own. The packages contain everything from flights and hotel stays to food and entrance tickets to museums and sights, so opting for one will save you a lot of research time. Luxury travel is no longer just for a privileged few, and Exoticca is making sure that it becomes accessible for more and more people. We featured Exoticca on our Barcelona startups to watch in 2018 list, check it out!
You must be wondering: what is a company that flies things to the edge of space and puts satellites into orbit with the help of balloons doing on this list? Well, they have a very forward-thinking reason to be considered a part of the travel industry. Zero 2 Infinity is doing no less than pioneering (near) space tourism. Their ’Bloon’ pod is a pressurized capsule elevated by a helium-inflated balloon that’s meant to carry humans. It can fly up to an altitude of 36 km (commercial airplanes fly at 10 km), past 99.5% of the Earth’s atmosphere, to offer a near space experience and the “the most graceful and pleasant journey to the edge of the world”. It’s the first such pod made for touristic purposes in Europe, and it was made by a Barcelona startup that dares to dream BIG. Travelling to the edge of space and staring down at the Earth from such an incredible perspective? We’re in.
This disruptive Barcelona travel tech startup will instantly become your go-to if you travel frequently, or if you just can’t be bothered to spend hours looking for flight tickets online. correYvuela is a travel chatbot that allows you to book flights with only three messages on WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram or even SMS. You can plan a trip from your smartphone whenever you have about 90 seconds of spare time, and the bot will provide you with a safe link where you can pay for your flight online. We spend half our lives tapping away in messaging apps, we might as well use some of that time to get things done!
If you’ve ever been annoyed by having to spend half a day at an airport, or wandering around a city when you were too exhausted to enjoy it because of an unfortunate layover, listen up. ByHours, a startup that made our list of Barcelona startups to watch in 2018, created an app that lets users book hotel rooms for microstays of 3, 6 or 12 hours. So that when you’re travelling, you can spend layovers or any extra time you may have in a comfortable hotel room. What’s even better is that they let you select the check-in and check-out time at your convenience. No more paying for more time than you actually spend in the room, or having to vacate the premises before you’re ready to go. Talk about personalization!
