Another month has gone by, and we’ve selected another batch of Barcelona startups that just closed funding rounds to serve as living proofs of the undiminished vitality and amazing potential of our city. From biotech to virtual reality, IoT and social networking apps, Barcelona startups are at the top of every technology in every industry.
Magical things happen when scientific research meets entrepreneurship. The Barcelona-based biotech startup Peptomyc just received €4.2M in series A funding from a group of investors led by Alta Life Sciences to continue the development of their peptide cancer therapy. This is a huge step for the startup, and for cancer research in general: they will use the funds to develop their product which stops cancer growth by killing cancer cells, with reduced side effects. We love hearing news of potentially paradigm-changing endeavors born in Barcelona, and we think it’s important for people to know that such projects exist. So spread the word!
The number one hot topic of this year is decidedly VR technology: it’s something completely new and mysterious that mesmerizes adults just as much as children. VR is proving to be popular among investors too: SoccerDream, a Barcelona-based startup that has created a VR football training programme just raised €500k to develop the first version of their product to be launched in 2018. The technology is built upon the Ekkono method, the cognitive soccer training method used worldwide by top clubs like Paris Saint-Germain. Are we witnessing the future of football training?
Running is a passion, and every runner should have the chance to share their passion with a like-minded community. Runator, a social network for runners born in Spain, raised €390k of funding and is planning to expand to Latin-America and become the running app of reference in Spanish-speaking countries. You can use the app to share your best running moments, voice your thoughts and doubts, challenge fellow runners to duels, join global races and so on. All this regardless of what app you use to track your runs: Runator will sync all your data and create your runner profile for you.
International tourism has hit an all-time high, and the unprecedented demand for holiday rentals calls for solutions that only the Internet of Things can handle. Roomonitor, a Barcelona-based startup that has created a SaaS platform for the digitalization of touristic accommodation, just raised €650k to finance its international expansion. They provide IoT tools to help people who are renting out their properties gain more control over security, noise levels and energy consumption. The results are: a more personalized guest experience, a better relationship with neighbors, and significant cost savings. Well done Roomonitor, and thanks for aiming to make the short-term rental industry more sustainable!
Data is everything. Data is life. Keep calm and love data. Typeform, once a Barcelona startup, now a hugely successful SaaS company with 160+ employees that just received an incredible $35M in series B funding, is all about data, and collecting it from humans in a conversational way. What does that mean? You may not know it, but you’ve probably taken part in it before by filling out an interactive typeform. Yes, their name is becoming a common noun, so you know they’re shooting for success. We can’t wait to see what they come up with next!
